      In a video interview with Healio, Fabian M. Johnston, MD, MHS, FACS, FSSO, associate professor of surgery and oncology, division chief of gastrointestinal surgical oncology, Jacob C. Handelsman, MD professor of abdominal surgery and program director of the complex general surgical oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, discussed:

      • existing challenges in diagnosing gastric cancer, including “vague symptomology” and lack of surveillance due to lesser prevalence in western countries;
      • disparities in care, access and screening;
      • the increasing utilization of minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as robotic gastrectomy; and
      • the importance of acknowledging the prognostic implications of a gastric cancer diagnosis.
