'Public health crisis' gets spotlight during National Osteoporosis Month

Higher carotenoid consumption associated with reduced hip fracture risk
Chinese adults who consume greater levels of carotenoids, including foods rich in beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein, are less likely to experience hip fracture vs. those with a diet that includes less of the antioxidants, according to findings from a case-control study.
Fracture liaison service increases BMD testing, osteoporosis treatment
Adults with osteoporosis who received care from a fracture liaison service program were more likely to undergo bone mineral density testing and initiate and adhere to osteoporosis treatment vs. adults receiving usual care, according to study findings published in Bone.
Mediterranean diet yields positive impact on postmenopausal bone, muscle mass

CHICAGO — Postmenopausal women who adhered to a Mediterranean diet had improved lumbar spine bone mineral density and appendicular lean mass index compared with women with low dietary adherence, according to a speaker here.
