BALTIMORE — In this video exclusive, Susan Weiner, MS, RDN, CDN, CDCES, FADCES, talks with Fatima C. Stanford, MD, MPH, MPA, MBA, FAAP, FACP, FAHA, FAMWA, FTOS, about how weight stigma affects access to obesity and diabetes care.

Weiner and Stanford are both Endocrine Today Editorial Board members. Weiner is owner and clinical director of Susan Weiner Nutrition, PLLC, in North Bellmore, NY, and the Diabetes in Real Life column editor. Stanford is associate professor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and an obesity medicine physician-scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Stanford describes how weight stigma contributes to development and persistence of obesity. She explains the goals of the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA), introduced in both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate (S.596, H.R.1577), which would allow Medicare beneficiaries access to appropriate health care providers and weight-loss drugs.

“Diabetes care and education specialists can be the catalyst for change by advocating for TROA, but also advocating for all of the things we know can play a major role in patients getting the care and respect they deserve [and] useful tools that may extend beyond lifestyle, if necessary,” Stanford said.
