VIDEO: ‘Flip the script’ and treat obesity first

NEW ORLEANS — In this video exclusive, James R. Gavin III, MD, PhD, talks with Jamy D. Ard, MD, about the role of weight loss in delaying and treating other chronic diseases.

Gavin is clinical professor of medicine at Emory University and chief medical officer of Healing Our Village. He is a Healio | Endocrine Today Co-Editor. Ard is professor of epidemiology and prevention and co-director of the Weight Management Center at the Wake Forest School of Medicine and an Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member.

Gavin and Ard discuss why progress in treating obesity has been slow and the need to reframe the target of weight loss.

“Ideally we would have a system that flips the script and says let’s treat obesity first, and then if people need additional control of their cardiometabolic risk factors, then we add on these other things that we know can be helpful,” Ard said.
