SAN DIEGO — In this video exclusive, Jonathan D. Leffert, MD, talks with Bart L. Clarke, MD, about hypoparathyroid and hyperparathyroid guidelines expected to published as two documents in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research later this year.

Leffert is managing partner at North Texas Endocrine Center and past president of 24-hour urine calcium. He is also an Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member. Clarke is professor of medicine in the division of endocrinology, metabolism, diabetes and nutrition at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

The new guidelines were developed by a large international group of endocrinologists, surgeons and pathologists. The main change from past guidelines is a lower 24-hour urine calcium cutoff for recommending surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism, according to Clarke. The new cutoff is at least 250 mg for women and 300 mg for men from at least 400 mg in the past. Clarke also discusses the pipeline for therapies.
