In this video perspective, endocrinologist Daniel Einhorn, MD, FACP, FACE, discusses the influence of lifestyle as risk factors for patients with prediabetes and diabetes.
Einhorn, president of Diabetes and Endocrine Associates and medical director of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute in San Diego, summarized his presentation at the Evolving Concepts in the Management of Diabetes and Cardiorenal Metabolic Diseases workshop held June 18 to 19 in Dallas.
“Lifestyle is not an afterthought or something in the background,” Einhorn told Healio, noting that changing a bad habit like smoking “is almost equivalent to every nonhealthy thing you can do, because it is so bad for you.”
Mental health is another important area, Einhorn said. “Our traumas, our money issues, drinking alcohol excessively, our inability to get enough sleep ... we need to at least create an opening to allow people to discuss issues that affect their lives.”
