SAN ANTONIO — Patients with higher reaction thresholds in their food allergies may be easier to treat with oral immunotherapy and see better outcomes, Scott H. Sicherer, MD, FAAP, said in this Healio exclusive video.

Sicherer, who is the Elliot and Roslyn Jaffe Professor of Pediatrics, Allergy and Immunology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, discussed potential advantages of this treatment during his presentation at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Meeting.

“What if you could already eat one or two or three peanuts? Is that a situation where we should leave well enough alone? Well, you’re kind of like ‘bite safe,’” Sicherer, who is also the director of the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute, said.

“Or maybe you’re someone who would be great to do oral immunotherapy because maybe you already having a higher threshold and would have an easier course of treatment,” he continued. “Maybe the treatment would be more long-lasting.”
