VIDEO: New frontier of biocompatible corneal inlays for presbyopia
PARIS — At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, Pavel Stodulka, MD, PhD, speaks about two new concepts in corneal reshaping inlays for presbyopia that have overcome the biocompatibility problems of previous corneal implants. The first, by the biotech company Allotex, is made of corneal donor tissue. The second, by the Swedish company LinkoCare, is made of a bioengineered material similar to human tissue.

VIDEO: New laser ablation profile reduces inflammation after PRK
PARIS — At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, Emilio Torres-Netto, MD, speaks about a new laser ablation profile that reduces the inflammatory response after PRK, based on preclinical experiments and genetic analyses to see how different ablation profiles affect corneal tissue. This research earned a best poster presentation award at the meeting.
VIDEO: Keratoconus observed as multiple entities
PARIS — At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, Mohamed Shafik Shaheen, MD, speaks about what is new in the management of irregular corneas. Sihem Lazreg, MD, PhD, focuses in particular on the need to redefine keratoconus based on the recently discovered multiplicity of pathogenetic and pathophysiological factors.
VIDEO: Surgeon presents intelligent, ultrafast femtosecond laser for cataract surgery
PARIS — Pavel Stodulka, MD, PhD, performed the first in-human surgery with a new femtosecond laser for cataract surgery manufactured by the French company Keranova. The laser, which raised great interest at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, fragments the nucleus in 20,000 cubic fragments of 200 µm size in less than 20 seconds and through a sophisticated intelligent technology customizes laser power to the different parts of the lens.
VIDEO: Treating dry eye preoperatively significantly improves accuracy of cataract surgery
PARIS — At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, John A. Hovanesian, MD, speaks about the importance of treating dry eye before cataract surgery. Four-week treatment with Xiidra (lifitegrast ophthalmic solution 5%, Novartis) significantly improved accuracy of biometry and visual outcomes in a study.
VIDEO: Supplementary IOL shows promising outcomes
PARIS — At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, Alessandro Mularoni, MD, speaks about a new sulcus-fixated supplementary IOL by Rayner, trifocal in the center and monofocal in the periphery, designed as an additional option for pseudophakic patients who wish to improve intermediate and near vision. His 10-month results within the European study show interesting outcomes.
