ANAHEIM, Calif. — The general fertility rate across the United States decreased over the past 30 years, according to data presented at the ASRM Scientific Congress & Expo.

Although general fertility rates (GFRs) played a role in the passage of policies on insurance coverage for infertility treatments, Katherine Bogaard, BA, a fourth-year medical student at University of California, Irvine, and colleagues identified other factors that contributed to these policies.

“There is a grouping of states that passed policy around 1991 and another grouping of states that passed policy between 2018 and 2020,” Bogaard told Healio. “This suggests that there are greater societal issues at play as well. This suggests that, potentially, states are following each other’s lead or following societal trends, and that there is more to passing policy than just the threshold GFR value.”
