NEW YORK — In this Healio Video Perspective, Dost Öngür, MD, PhD, discusses highlights from his talk at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting on the importance of early intervention treatment for psychotic disorders.

Studies show that specialized early intervention treatment, including team-based care, is associated with better outcomes for patients with psychotic disorders, according to Öngür.

“The long-term hope is that by early detection and intervention, we can improve the long-term outcomes for our patients with psychotic disorders,” Öngür, chief of the psychotic disorders division at McLean Hospital and William P. and Henry B. Test Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, said. “This would in fact make a greater impact than waiting until a patient has become severely ill and chronically ill and then intervening and hoping to reverse that long-term decline.”
