NEW YORK — In this Healio video from the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting, Bhagwan A. Bahroo, MD, discusses the relationship that nutrition and mental state have with an individual’s overall health.

“Just like everything in life, (food and how it affects the mind) a circle and we want to make sure that circle is healthy and stays healthy,” said Bahroo, director of interventional medicine at Columbia Associates in Arlington, Virginia. “Let’s work on eating healthy foods, let’s make sure we encourage each and every case, each and every person we see.”

For clinicians, he added, it is crucial to impress upon patients the importance of nutrition. While medications are beneficial and should not be discouraged, their prescription and use can be curtailed with preventive measures such as good sleep and good meal selection featuring fruits and vegetables.

Bahroo additionally touted the benefits of the Mediterranean diet — which has a growing body of scientific evidence about its benefits — along with the Indo-Mediterranean diet, which includes spices from the Indian subcontinent.
