Before treatment, any patient who is at risk for TD, or tardive dyskinesia, should be screened for tardive dyskinesia. So, patients who are on those medicines that block dopamine, every three to six months should be screened for tardive dyskinesia, meaning get a physical exam where you look for those movements. It doesn't have to be a neurologist that does it, primary care doctors can do it, psychiatrists can do it. If tardive dyskinesia is detected and diagnosed and those movements or symptoms are affecting quality of life, then there are treatments available that can help. Many psychiatrists prescribe treatments for tardive dyskinesia or often they'll refer to a movement disorders neurologist and either approach is fine depending on their level of comfort.
