NEW YORK — As president of the Infectious Disease Society of America, Tina Q. Tan, MD, FAAP, FIDSA, FPIDS, said one of her top goals is to get people to understand the critical role pediatric providers play in caring for children.
“The vast majority of adult infectious disease physicians will not take care of individuals under 16 years of age, and they will not take care of infants or young children ... [who make] up about 23% of the population,” Tan, an attending physician at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Fienberg School of Medicine, says in this video from the Infectious Diseases in Children Symposium.
Tan called on pediatric physicians to advocate for the protection of their patients as the United States changes leadership in the coming months.
“There are certain issues that could have a significant impact on the American public and public health,” Tan said. “But the impact would be significantly more negative in the pediatric realm, especially if there are issues brought up with regards to vaccination, removal of fluoride from the water and drinking raw milk as opposed to pasteurized milk.”
