C. Benjamin Ma, MD, has been appointed as chair of the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of California San Francisco, according to a press release.

Ma, a native of Hong Kong, has held the position of vice chair of adult clinical operations in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) since 2018. He has served as chief of the division of sports medicine and shoulder surgery at UCSF, as well as the surgical director at the UCSF Mount Zion campus. MA currently serves as the team physician for the University of California Berkeley and the San Francisco Giants.

Ma earned his medical degree at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery and a fellowship in musculoskeletal research at the University of Pittsburgh. He then completed a fellowship in shoulder and knee surgery and sports medicine at Hospital for Special Surgery.

“I have no doubt that Dr. Ma’s history of exceptional clinical care and research, devotion to mentoring and supporting future leaders in musculoskeletal care, and commitment to diversity and equity in the field position him well to lead the UCSF department of orthopedic surgery as they work to pioneer musculoskeletal discovery and innovative care to transform lives,” Talmadge E. King, Jr., MD, dean of the UCSF school of medicine, said in the release.

According to the release, Ma will begin his new role on Jan. 1, 2024.
