BOULDER, Colo. — In this video from the International Extreme Sports Medicine Congress, Andrew Nathanson, MD, discusses common surfing injuries and compares injury rates with traditional sports, such as baseball and soccer.

“A number of studies have been done on the incidence of injuries for the sport of surfing, and surfing comes out somewhere between baseball and soccer. So, yes, surfing is safer than soccer,” he said. “Most injuries are caused by impact with the surfboard. Lacerations are the most common injuries, and catastrophic or fatal injuries usually involve the cervical spine, the eye or drowning,” he added.
