AAOS honors West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation founder with 2022 humanitarian award

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons presented Keith S. Feder, MD, FAAOS, founder of the West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation, with its 2022 humanitarian award.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the AAOS as a humanitarian," Feder said in an AAOS press release. "My sincere hope is that this award will increase awareness of the young, underserved student athletes in the U.S. who do not receive the high-quality orthopedic sports medicine care and core services that they need and deserve."

The humanitarian award honors members of the AAOS who have distinguished themselves through outstanding musculoskeletal-related humanitarian activities in the U.S. or abroad. According to its website, the nonprofit West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation was established in 1994 to eliminate disparities in sports medicine care for economically disadvantaged high school students who may not have health insurance or access to care. The nonprofit provides this care for free in Los Angeles County, while also educating and uplifting the youth it serves.

“Dr. Feder has a lifelong philosophy as to the benefits of participation in school-based sports,” Carol Frey, MD, AAOS, FAAOS, of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center/West Coast Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, said in the press release. “He knows from his own experience on the field, during training and in his practice that sports participation encourages cooperation and understanding, helps foster and build relationships, enhances equal opportunity and imparts valuable lessons and skills needed in life to thrive.”
