A congress is as good as its scientific program. Therefore, each EFORT Annual Congress, even a virtual one, relies on the high-quality content from orthopaedic and traumatology physicians and researchers from Europe and worldwide.

The EFORT Scientific Awards are selected among the many experimental and clinical studies submitted for the Congress. On top of our long-established Free Paper and Jacques Duparc (Best Posters) Awards, in 2018 EFORT introduced the Michael Freeman Award. It was created in memory of Prof. Michael Freeman, FRCS, one of the founding fathers of EFORT and EFORT president from 1994 to 1995, after he passed away in September 2017. The award honors his lifetime contribution to both the European and the international orthopaedic community.

In 2020, despite the particular context given by the global COVID-19 pandemic, EFORT, as the European leading platform for musculoskeletal research, implemented a new initiative focusing on the inclusion within the scientific program of the Congress of the best oral presentation from each National Member Society. Indeed, to showcase the best current orthopaedics and traumatology work to the widest audience of surgeons in Europe, each EFORT National Member Society was invited to choose their Best National Paper candidate through a transparent process following their own selection criteria. These pieces of work correspond to complete research studies unpublished at the time of selection by the corresponding national society.

Best National Paper initiative

To involve all the EFORT National Member Societies in the scientific content building of the congress and stimulate the focus on high quality science by creating a research culture within the EFORT community, selected abstracts from each country were forwarded to EFORT for further consideration in the Best National Paper competition. From 24 submitted abstracts, the corresponding ePoster presentations followed a reviewing process coordinated by the EFORT Science Committee to select six research projects and include them in the final scientific highlighted live session of the first Virtual EFORT Congress program. The Best National Paper was selected live by an audience via real-time voting during the highlighted oral session held on Friday 30 October 2020 at 16:30 CET.
