Medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction with suture fixation may improve patellar stability

Published results showed good outcomes and significant improvement in patellar stability among patients with recurrent patellar dislocation treated with medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction with transosseous patellar suture fixation.

Perspective from Marc Tompkins, MD

Researchers assessed IKDC subjective knee score, Kujala score, Tegner score, range of motion, congruence angle, patellar tilt angle and complications for 29 patients with recurrent patellar dislocation treated with medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction with transosseous suture patellar fixation.

Results showed none of the patients experienced recurrent dislocation for a minimum of 2 years. Researchers found significant improvements in the average IKDC subjective knee evaluation score from 53 preoperatively to 87 postoperatively, as well as in the Kujala score from 54 preoperatively to 90 postoperatively, the Lysholm score from 50 preoperatively to 89 postoperatively and the Tegner score from 3 preoperatively to 5 postoperatively. Researchers noted a significant decrease in the congruence angle from 22° preoperatively to –3° postoperatively. The patellar tilt angle also decreased from 23° preoperatively to 5° postoperatively, according to results.

At the last follow-up, results showed 86.21% of patients were completely pain-free when performing activities of daily living. Researchers found 93.1% of patients reported being very satisfied or satisfied with the results. – by Casey Tingle
