AAHKS announced C. Lowry Barnes, MD, as president

The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons announced C. Lowry Barnes, MD, as president during its board of directors meeting, which was held on video conference due to the cancellation of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting.

Chair of the department or orthopedic surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Carl L. Nelson, MD, chair in orthopedic surgery, Barnes has been a member of AAHKS since 1997 and he has previously served as treasurer of the association, according to a press release. The release noted Barnes also served as treasurer for the Foundation for Arthroplasty Research and Education and was involved with physician reimbursement on the national level with the advocacy committee.

He was a founding managing partner of Arkansas Specialty Orthopaedics in 1998, where he was president for more than a decade, according to the release. Barnes served on the board of directors at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center from 1997 to 2010 and as president of the St. Vincent Infirmary Physician Hospital Organization.

Past president of the Arkansas Orthopaedic Society, the Southern Orthopaedic Association and the Society for Arthritic Joint Surgery, Barnes was named the Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist by the Southern Orthopaedic Association in 2014. He previously served on the board of directors of the Arkansas Arthritis Foundation and earned the organization’s Person of the Year honor in 2000. In 2019, Barnes was named Arkansas Business Health Care Heroes Administrator of the year. The release noted Barnes established the HipKnee Arkansas Foundation, lectures nationally and internationally on total joint replacement surgery and has been active in research on the hip and knee.
