EFORT

For each edition of the EFORT Congress, preparing an up-to-date scientific program based on high-quality scientific findings is key to accomplish the organization’s mission of ensuring the best orthopaedic and traumatology education across Europe. Construction of the first program draft starts 18 months before the meeting and is based on the collection of proposals from all the EFORT National Member Societies, numerous specialty collaborating societies and each EFORT standing committee.

Until now, EFORT invited sessions embedded in the congress scientific program (six formats, representing 35% of the content) were chosen by the Science Committee directly from individual proposals submitted by EFORT partners and members of the international orthopaedics and traumatology (O&T) community. To improve the structure of the Congress scientific content, EFORT has progressively increased collaboration with the European Specialty Societies, which will now not only run their own sessions embedded into the overall program, but also compile a list of specific topics suitable for a 3-year-cycle program to be covered for each expertise.

These topics have been chosen as tracks to be covered (not too restrictive) to leave free some extent of the scientific program for novel proposals from the EFORT National Member Societies. Indeed, in parallel, all EFORT national representatives and individual experts will remain free to make independent proposals for topics and speakers to be considered, particularly regarding “hot topics” within their countries.

Starting in mid-November 2019, we have made available an online platform to submit proposals for sessions to be included in the 2021 scientific program. Active participation in building the scientific program through this system will now be widely promoted through different communication channels to allow all members of the O&T community to submit topics to be potentially presented during the meeting. In January 2020, at the end of proposal submission, the 24 members of the EFORT Science Committee will review the topics suggested and rank them according to their interest, relevance to the existing O&T educational needs and link to the main congress theme. This collaborative work specifically assembles 40% of the final content, the so-called “EFORT Invited Sessions,” which follow one of the six EFORT pre-defined formats focused on in the following different learning objectives: Complex Case Discussion; Debate Forum; Evidence-Based Medicine Session; Instructional Lecture; Interactive Expert Exchange; and Symposium.

Well-known European experts with an international reputation on specific topics are appointed to organize each session that is integrated in the first program draft. These leading surgeons are then invited to frame the detailed content of their sessions by defining the titles of all the presentations and suggesting the best speakers to fully cover the assigned topics. Importantly, the faculty panel in charge of the session’s composition is always constituted of members from different national member societies to take advantage of the heterogeneous medical background of the speakers and foster input around diverse treatment approaches and daily practice considerations.

As was recently announced, the EFORT Congress will be held 9 to 11 June 2021 in Lisbon. The online proposal submission will remain open until Monday 6 January 2020, 23:59 CET.

The best way to promote specific topics for the 2021 EFORT Congress is to create an account at the online platform (or login with your former profile) and share all your specific interests by choosing among the scientific areas to be covered. Seize this opportunity to bring your ideas to the core of the EFORT educational mission.
