The governor of Indiana has awarded George F. Rapp, MD, with the 2019 Sachem Award, the state’s highest honor.
“Dr. George Rapp has helped make his hometown, our state and the world a much better place to live through his devotion to the arts, education and medicine,” Governor Eric J. Holcomb, said in a press release. “You would be hard-pressed to find someone who has made the kind of impact he has in so many different fields.”
According to the release, the Sachem Award is given to recognize “a lifetime of excellence and moral virtue” that has brought credit and honor to the state.
An inventor of a hip prosthesis for total hip replacement, Rapp also helped found Sofamor Danek, now a division of Medtronic. During his 35 years in practice as an orthopedic surgeon, Rapp has been chief of orthopedic surgery at St. Vincent Hospital, a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine and director of the Scoliosis Clinic at Riley Hospital for Children. Rapp has treated numerous children with scoliosis and has helped train many orthopedic surgery residents.
Rapp has also made a global impact by providing volunteer orthopedic surgeons to further orthopedic education in Africa and helping to develop surgical suites and housing facilities in Eldoret, Kenya.
Since his retirement, Rapp has worked with Crossroads of America Boy Scouts, the Indiana Historical Society, the Indiana State Museum and Indiana Landmarks.
