Arthrosurface Inc. announced the launch of its SpeedSpiral carpometacarpal system, intended for patients with osteoarthritis in the thumb, according to a company press release.
“The joint at the base of the thumb is the most mobile in the hand, allowing us to effortlessly perform the most basic tasks like writing, eating and getting dressed,” Steve Ek, CEO of Arthrosurface, said in the release. “But over time, all of the movement and pressure at the thumb joint can cause ‘wear and tear,’ resulting in joint deterioration and arthritis for many individuals. Arthrosurface has been searching for the most effective surgical treatment for addressing this joint pathology for over a decade. With the guidance of our surgeon design team, I’m convinced we now have it.”
According to the release, The SpeedSpiral carpometacarpal system uses a pre-shaped allograft implant for the treatment of thumb carpometacarpal joint pain or instability caused by OA. The implant was created to supplement and support the flexor carpi radialis tendon and capsuloligamentous structures at the thumb. It reportedly minimizes OR time.
