Medacta, Geisinger pilot program to cover all future costs for plan members with knee replacement

Medacta International and Geisinger announced a first-of-its-kind pilot program for a lifetime guarantee knee replacement in which the companies will cover the full cost of care correlated with knee replacement surgeries during a patient’s lifetime, according to a company press release.

“This new lifetime guarantee means that Medacta will stand behind its products and make a commitment to our patients: They won’t be forced to take on all the risk after leaving the operating room,” Francesco Siccardi, CEO of Medacta International, told Healio.com/Orthopedics. “Moving forward, our company, alongside our partners at Geisinger, will remain by the patient’s side to offer ongoing support for any future associated procedures, big or small. Risk sharing is the next step toward establishing value-based care and requires all players in health care to participate; we’re happy to be working with Geisinger, a forward-thinker in the space, on this new, first-of-its-kind program in orthopedics. This lifetime program builds upon the larger Mpower Sustainable Solutions initiative at Medacta, which makes value-based care and long-term sustainable health care programs a key part of our company’s mission.”

According to a company press release, the lifetime knee replacement program will be part of the Geisinger ProvenRecovery portfolio and cover the full costs of care for Geisinger health plan members who undergo knee replacement surgery. The program will also provide reimbursement for future care patients may need throughout their lives. Medacta and Geisinger will proportionally share the costs for the implants and hospital fees, and patients will still be under the Geisinger health plan and will be treated by Geisinger providers. – by Monica Jaramillo
