AAOS announces launch of musculoskeletal tumor registry pilot program

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has partnered with the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society to launch the musculoskeletal tumor registry feasibility pilot program, which will collect data on orthopedic oncology, bone tumor procedures, according to a press release.

Six U.S. academic centers will participate in the program for 1 year and include Cleveland Clinic, Dartmouth College, Johns Hopkins University, The Ohio State University, Stanford University and the University of Iowa. Data collected will include patient demographics, patient baseline information and examination, tumor baseline, treatment and post-treatment, surgery details, postoperative data and patient-reported outcomes. Volunteer representatives from the AAOS and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) will lead the pilot program and report to the AAOS Registry Program Registry Oversight Committee (ROC).

“This pilot is in important milestone for the growing AAOS Registry Program as it will be the first diagnosis-based registry of the AAOS portfolio,” William J. Maloney, MD, the Boswell Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University and chair of the ROC, said in the release. “The six pilot sites play a critical role in ensuring we appropriately define what and how we capture data in this complex specialty. The ROC looks forward to evaluating the feasibility of this endeavor in collaboration with our MSTS colleagues, supporting the development of a registry for orthopedic oncology patient care.”
