EFORT

The six Interactive Expert Exchange (IEE) sessions scheduled for our upcoming Lisbon meeting will allow attendees to sustain or reject a commonly used procedure by extensively discussing all treatments available for a specific medical condition. The session format is therefore the equivalent of an open discussion within a group of fellows confronting each other about their daily practice. During this direct exchange, a high involvement of practitioners from the audience arises and challenges each indication or technique presented by the Faculty panel invited.

The proceeding of these sessions includes audience-voting moments to involve the attendees in the decisional steps, as well as to measure the impact of the controversy raised.

The organizer appoints several orthopaedic surgeons excelling in the session main topic. Together they give related presentations and address different problems generally found in the medical scenario given. By directly asking: “What would you do?” to participants, all treatment options will be debated depending on the strength of the existing evidence and the most persuasive advice from experts.

As a second step, every speaker presents a few clinical cases bringing additional information and an accurate example (of both success and failure) for each condition or technique.

Two invited challengers raise controversy for all questions addressed during the discussion periods to increase the interactivity from the audience by continuously questioning the position of each speaker. A final analysis of any changed opinions is performed based on a second voting session during which the same initial questions are asked.

The analysis of complex situations, which are both challenging and difficult to treat, will benefit of a shared expertise. The speakers of any IEE should present diverse approaches, new treatment options and introduce precise individual solutions to help specialists and senior practitioners/consultants to improve their skills in the field.
