PHILADELPHIA At the International Consensus Meeting on Musculoskeletal Infection, Javad Parvizi, MD, FRCS, spoke about the topics the delegates are debating, here. Among the debatable topics was the distinction between acute and chronic musculoskeletal infection.

“Traditionally, we have talked of acute being some infection that occurs within 3, 4 ,6 weeks of an inciting event or index arthroplasty vs. chronic, which would be beyond that. Most of us don’t believe that arbitrary division between acute and chronic applies, and that was reflected in the discussion that went on,” he said. “One of the accomplishments of the census is that the arbitrary division between acute and chronic has been eliminated.  We all feel that infection is a continuum that starts at one point and continues to advance and establish. In terms of surgical treatment and management of these patients, to have that division between acute and chronic that is purely determined by times is not acceptable. Other factors need to go into this equation.”
