The incidence of surgical site infection after orthopaedic procedures continues to increase and have a potential affect on the success of procedures orthopaedic surgeons perform and possibly threaten our profession, according to Javad Parvizi, MD, FRCS.
In his June 2018 Infection Watch column, Parvizi discussed the goals of the Second International Consensus Meeting on Musculoskeletal Infection, which will be held July 25-27 in Philadelphia.
He is co-chairing the meeting with Thorsten Gehrke, MD.
“The time has come to gather again and determine what we know, what we do not know and what we need to do to know more,” Parvizi wrote.
In all, 18 workgroups that involve experts on orthopaedic infection from more than 80 counties, and 200 members of orthopaedic societies will convene to develop a document on musculoskeletal infection that will ultimately help improve the care of patients.
