back injections

In this video from Open Operating Theatre, Marie-Therese Unterweger, MD, from the Center of Spinal Therapy, Schön Klinik Nürnberg Fürth in Germany, spoke about injection techniques used for the cervical spine and lumbar spine: the facet joint injection and the epidural injection.

In the first case, the patient is placed in prone position and the fluoroscope is placed in anteroposterior (AP) position to visualize both facets. The injection area is disinfected, and spinal needles are placed bilaterally into the facet joints under fluoroscopic control. A local anesthetic is injected on both sides.

For the second case, the patient is placed in the prone position and the fluoroscope is placed in the AP position. The injection area is disinfected and draped. Local anesthetic is injected into the puncture canal to minimize pain. The epidural bevel needle is injected and when it is passed the ligamentum flavum, resistance loss is noted. A contrast agent is injected. The correct needle placement in the epidural space is then confirmed and local anesthesia is injected.

This video is intended as a teaching tool to help surgeons prepare for surgery or they can use it as a refresher on the surgical technique and indications for this surgery.
