FundamentalVR announced the launch of Fundamental Surgery, reportedly the first virtual reality and haptic simulation platform.

According to a company press release, the launch release focuses on orthopedic surgical procedures such as spinal pedicle screw placement and total knee arthroplasty. Additional procedures will be added to the platform in the coming months. The main goal for the platform is to give surgeons the opportunity to train, practice and rehearse on a safe, low-cost platform.

“This is just the beginning,” Richard Vincent, co-founder and CEO, said in the release. “Our strategy is to be hardware agnostic and provide an evolving [software as a service] SaaS-based software platform. We see this as the beginning of a positive disruption in the market. Over the coming months, we will build out our orthopedic offering before moving into other surgical specialisms including general surgery, cardiovascular and otolaryngology.”
