Breast cancer history linked to increased pulmonary embolism rates after THA

Patients with a history of breast cancer who underwent total hip arthroplasty had increased rates of pulmonary embolism, chest CT utilization and 90-day reimbursements, according to recently published data.

Researchers matched 43,902 patients who underwent THA and did not have a history of breast cancer with patients who did have a history of breast cancer based on age and demographics. Endpoints included length of stay, medical complications, surgical complications and costs, according to the study abstract.

Results showed that patients with a history of breast cancer had higher rates of pulmonary embolism and increased use of chest CT imaging at 90 days postoperatively. Researchers found similar rates of surgical complications between the two groups. Although an analysis of the data showed no differences in mean day of surgery reimbursement between the groups, the study results showed that patients with breast cancer had significantly higher global period reimbursements at a mean of $15,432 vs. $14,701 in patients without a history of breast cancer. – by Casey Tingle
