Geisinger announced it will expand its ProvenCare total hip program by standing behind the costs associated with orthopedic surgeries for a lifetime, according to a company press release.

Geisinger collaborated with Medacta International for this first-of-its-kind pilot program, which offers Geisinger Health Plan members who undergo hip replacement surgery an unlimited time frame for any needed future surgical care and costs. The costs will be shared evenly between Geisinger and Medacta and will include the device and all hospital costs while the patient stays under the Geisinger Health Plan and is treated by Geisinger providers.

“With this risk-sharing partnership, Medacta’s first, we’re redefining what is meant by an orthopedic ‘product’ to include clinical and financial outcomes associated with surgical technique, surgeon training and dedicated instrumentation, in addition to the implant itself,” Eric Dremel, president of Medacta USA, told Healio.com/Orthopedics. “We’re going above and beyond what is expected in our industry by sharing in the cost of overall care with Geisinger, not just committing to provide a replacement implant. We believe this model of cost sharing is an important step forward to improving health care sustainability and the overall patient experience, and we see Geisinger as the ideal partner for this endeavor.”

According to the release, the first patient in the pilot program underwent a total hip replacement on Feb. 26, 2018. – by Monica Jaramillo
