VIDEO: Risk factors identified for prolonged opioid use in trauma patients in inner-city, county hospitals

NEW ORELEANS— At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Lisa K. Cannada, MD, discussed a study that compared prolonged opioid used in orthopedic trauma patients treated at an inner-city hospital and a county hospital.

“We, as physicians, need to own the opioid crisis and properly advise patients ... ,” she said. “So, we need to educate our patients as to what our rules and expectations are.”

She added, “[We] gave you risk factors: Those unemployed, insurance, those that are smokes and those that had a positive toxic screen on their arrival are more likely to require prolonged opioid [use] after 12 weeks, and perhaps we should counsel them ahead of time as to what our expectations are.”
