The Arthroscopy Association of North America and VirtaMed signed a 2-year collaboration to make VirtaMed the exclusive partner for virtual reality simulation training for the group, according to a press release.

As part of the collaboration, the Orthopedic Learning Center (OLC) in Rosemont, Illinois will have VirtaMed ArthroS simulators for knee, shoulder and hip arthroscopy training, as well as for basic skills training for the Fundamentals of Arthroscopy Surgery Training program.

“We are excited about the opportunity to add high-fidelity simulation into our selection of educational tools. VirtaMed’s top-notch virtual reality simulators are a perfect match to the new OLC with upgraded facilities and state-of-the-art technologies,” Robert E. Hunter, MD, Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) president, said in the release.

The two organizations will develop new content for the simulators and a large learning curriculum. After the organizations have collected data from course participants, faculty and experienced AANA members, the groups will create curriculums and proficiency exams. AANA and VirtaMed would like to use these tools to set standards and practices for arthroscopic training and assessment.

“We are honored to have been selected as the preferred and exclusive partner by such an influential organization,” Rick Hoedt, general manager at VirtaMed Inc., said in the release. “With the various medtech customers and other societies we have as partners, it is further proof that our product and services lead the market in realism and that VirtaMed is the go-to partner for surgical simulation. We share the same goals as AANA regarding education and training and are excited to join forces officially to enhance arthroscopy education. We’re also looking forward to working together with residency programs and simulation centers around the country and world to implement the new standard and to share best practices and standardization for improving patient safety.”
