Investigators developed a residency research ranking system for orthopedic residency program leaders to evaluate the progress of a program and to compare programs, according to a study recently published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma.

Researchers developed a benchmarking system to assess an ability of orthopedic residency programs to perform “meaningful” research. Investigators used the Journal of Citation Reports to create a list of articles in orthopedic literature and identified 45 journals.

From the 45 journals, investigators developed a database that included 102,966 articles published from 2005 to 2015. The investigators searched the articles to attribute the publications to residency programs. The total number of citations from the articles was used to create an impact ranking for the residency programs. Impact ranking was compared to the number of article published.

“We believe this a novel methodology to create a system by which residency program chairmen and directors can assess progress over time as well as accurate comparison to other programs,” the authors wrote. – by Monica Jaramillo
