VIDEO: Transthoracic mini-open approach for anterior mono-segmental stabilization and fusion in the thoracolumbar spine

In this video from Open Operating Theatre, Andreas Pingel, MD, professor from the BG Unfallklinik, Center for Spine Surgery and Neurotraumatology in Frankfurt, Germany, discussed how to perform a transthoracic mini-open approach for anterior mono-segmental stabilization and fusion in the thoracolumbar spine in a 32-year-old man with a cranial burst fracture.

The first surgery performed was a percutaneous posterior bisegmental stabilization from T12 to L2. For the second surgery, the patient was placed in a lateral position on the right side of the OR table. After the transthoracic approach was performed, the K-wires were inserted. The motion segment was stabilized with an angled stable plate system with cannulated polyaxial and monoaxial self-tapping screws. Iliac crest bone graft was used to achieve maximum fusion.

This video is intended as a teaching tool to help surgeons prepare for surgery or they can use it as a refresher on the surgical technique and indications for this surgery.
