Results of this retrospective study showed a positive association between disease activity, allogeneic blood transfusion volume and change of hematocrit concentration from preoperatively to postoperatively with perioperative blood loss among patients with ankylosing spondylitis undergoing total hip arthroplasty.
Researchers collected and analyzed demographic characteristics, perioperative laboratory values, intraoperative data, transfusion rate, transfusion volume and data on hemostatic use among 44 patients with ankylosing spondylitis who underwent unilateral THA from 2011 to 2016.
Results showed a mean volume of blood loss of approximately 1735.19 mL during THA. Ankylosing spondylitis disease activity score, fibrinogen concentration and surgical time were positively associated with perioperative blood loss, according to results from multiple linear regression analyses. Researchers also found univariate linear regression analysis suggested a correlation between ankylosing spondylitis disease activity score, red blood cell transfusion and change of hematocrit concentration from preoperatively to postoperatively with blood loss. – by Casey Tingle
