Medacta International announced the first surgeries performed using the 3DMetal tibial cones, which were recently cleared by the FDA.

The tibial cones can be used for structural support in areas with bone deficiency that may affect revision implant fixation. The 3DMetal tibial cones are to be used with the company’s GMK revision, GMK hinge system and the GMK tibial extension stems and offset. According to a company press release, Kevin Hardt, MD, and David Manning, MD, of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, and Dragan Jeremic, MD, of St. Vincenz Krankenhaus Brakel in Brakel, Germany, performed the first surgeries using the technology.

“It is Medacta’s mission to be a partner for our surgeons, even in the most challenging scenarios,” Francesco Siccardi, executive vice president of Medacta International, said in the release. “With our innovative 3DMetal technology, we have extended the range of advanced solutions for our surgeons and we will continue to do so in the future.”

According to the release, the 3DMetal is a 3-D advanced biomaterial that allows direct structural and functional connection with bone through an interconnecting pore structure comparable to the cancellous bone structure. The tibial cones are to be launched at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting in March 2018.
