Imageless navigation yielded accurate safe zone placement of THA components

Recently published results showed imageless navigation can help with accurate placement of the components in the safe zone during total hip arthroplasty.

Researchers evaluated 40 cementless revision total hip arthroplasties (THAs) performed using imageless navigation with the concept of combined anteversion applied in cup positioning based on Widmer’s equation. Researchers postoperatively evaluated the inclination of the cup on standard anteroposterior view of the radiograph and anteversion of the cup using CT scan. Researchers defined the safe zone as a cup inclination of approximately 40° and combined anteversion of the cup and femoral stem of approximately 37° based on Widmer’s equation.

Prior to revision THA, researchers found an inclination, anteversion of the cup and combined anteversion of approximately 40.8°, 25.8° and 30.3°, respectively. Results showed an inclination, anteversion of the cup and combined anteversion of approximately 42.3°, 25° and 36.1°, respectively, after revision THA. Researchers noted an average anteversion of the revised femoral stems of approximately 15.3°, while the average anteversion of the remained femoral stems was approximately 17.4°. After the revision surgery, the position of the implants relative to the safe zone showed no outliers. Researchers also observed no dislocation or osteolysis after the surgery. – by Casey Tingle
