The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society announced it has launched a new consumer awareness campaign — called Look for the “O” — to help the public recognize the importance of contacting a foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon for foot and ankle health care needs.

“Consumers do not generally give much thought to their foot health — that is, until something goes wrong,” Jeffrey E. Johnson, MD, president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) board of directors, said in a press release. “But 75% of all people experience foot pain at some point in their lives. That is why AOFAS leadership felt it was imperative to educate consumers, so that they know how to find the best medical care before a problem arises.”

According to the release, the campaign promotes the message that foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons are fully trained medical doctors; they complete extensive and ongoing medical training; and they offer surgical and nonsurgical treatment. The campaign also stresses that consumers should ask for a second opinion from a foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon, especially when surgery is advised.

As part of the campaign, myFootCareMD.com provides consumers with information about foot and ankle conditions and treatments and allows them to search for foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons near them. The campaign also offers patient-oriented materials for doctors and health care professionals to use in their offices, according to the release.
