Male soccer players have high prevalence of groin problems

Investigators found that male soccer players had a high groin problem prevalence during a period of match congestion.

Using the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center Overuse Injury questionnaire for a 6-week period of match congestion, researchers registered groin problems in 240 soccer players. Investigators determined the average weekly prevalence for all groin problems as well as the substantial groin problems.

They found 112 male players and 20 female players out of the 240 players had a at least one episode of groin problems. There was a 29% average weekly prevalence seen in male players for any groin problem and a 32% average weekly prevalence of substantial groin problems. According to researchers, elite male players compared with female players had a higher chance of having a groin problem. Researchers did not observe a difference between elite male players, sub elite male players and amateur male players regarding the risk for experiencing groin problems. Further, they observed no difference between both elite male and female players or among the levels of play in senior male soccer players regarding substantial groin problems. – by Monica Jaramillo
