Recently published results showed women undergoing ACL reconstruction with doubled semitendinosus-gracilis graft constructs were more likely to receive grafts with diameters of less than 8 mm.

David A. Parker , MBBS(Hons), B Med Sci, FRACS, and colleagues examined 108 arthroscopic ACL reconstructions in 107 patients. Of these reconstructions, 75 had a doubled semitendinosus-gracilis (4-STG) graft construct and 33 had a quadrupled semitendinosus (4-ST) graft construct. Researchers used a region-of-interest tool to manually identify the outlines of the semitendinosus and gracilis tendons in the axial slice of a preoperative T2-weighted MRI.

Results showed a significantly larger median graft diameter among patients in the 4-ST group compared with patients in the 4-STG group. Researchers noted an increased odds of receiving grafts with diameters of less than 8 mm among women and patients who received the 4-STG preparation technique. Key predictors of graft diameter included semitendinosus cross-sectional areas and height, according to results of the regression model. – by Casey Tingle
