In a little more than 2 weeks, EFORT will again host its annual congress, its 18th such meeting, which will be held in Vienna 31 May to 2 June. In 15 rooms running in parallel, a total of 200 sessions will be held from early morning to late afternoon during 3 days and provide a total of 18.5 hours of education. The EFORT Congress has become the orthopaedic congress of the year in Europe and covers all aspects of each corner in the orthopaedic and traumatology fields, including specialty sessions with assistance from major European specialty societies. Also after receiving more than 3,400 free papers, posters and case abstracts, 633 papers have been evaluated and selected for 72 free paper sessions. There is no other place in the European orthopaedic community in which such a high number of free papers are accepted, giving several young European orthopaedic surgeons the opportunity to present their research for approximately 6,000 congress participants.
The main theme for Vienna is “Sports Activities and Orthopaedic Practice” and 13 sessions have been organized under this theme. Sport has become a major part of everyday life. Professional sport activities are well-appreciated and broadcasted all over the world every day. Many of us are active in sport activities at a much lower level, but are stimulated and impressed by the performance of professional sportsmen and women. For many years, work-related physical activity has been reduced and therefore, physical activity can only be found in our free time in the form of sport or fitness. There are many studies that show we need to increase our physical activity to live a longer and healthier life.
Knee, hip injuries and sports
If you are interested in sports medicine, there will be plenty of sessions to meet your interest. On Wednesday, 31 May a symposium on “Return to Sports after Surgery for Degenerative Knee Disorders” runs from 9:00 to 10:30 and “Sports Activities after Total Hip Arthroplasty” also runs that day at 11:00 to 12:00. On Thursday, 1 June a lecture will be given at 17:00 entitled, “Prevention and Orthopaedic Management of the Most Frequent Football Injuries,” which will certainly attract several congress participants.
As always, there will be plenty of educational and invited sessions. We have planned 19 instructional lectures and 44 symposia on orthopaedic and trauma topics. As registries are becoming increasingly important, more sessions on this topic have been organized. If you look forward to learning about the outcome of replaced joints in your young patients, a session on Wednesday at 9:00 to 10:30 may be of interest to you.
Proximal tibial fractures will be debated on Wednesday 31 May in the afternoon in three sessions (one instructional lecture and two free paper sessions).
Full day course
On Thursday, 1 June, a full day “Advanced Course in Total Knee and Hip Replacement” will be held. Last year, this was the best attended session at an EFORT Congress, with more than 800 attendees in the auditorium. This year, knee will be discussed in the morning and hip will be discussed in the afternoon.
Also on Thursday, a symposium has been organized entitled, “How to Improve Your Abstract for an International Orthopaedic Congress.” To overcome having your abstract rejected, you may pick-up some good points in this session.
Clinical case sessions are always well attended and, in Vienna, we have planned several such sessions. Look for these in the program and come and debate the cases.
Finally, do not miss the new sessions in which free papers competing for the best paper in trauma and in orthopaedics will be presented. These two sessions will run on Friday, 2 June in the morning in the Helsinki room. The audience will participate in selecting the best papers, so do not miss this opportunity.
It is my sincere hope that we at EFORT have succeeded in creating a great educational program for you, and we look forward to welcoming you to the 18th Annual EFORT Congress in Vienna.
