In this video from Open Operating Theatre, Florian Ringel MD, from the Department of Neurosurgery at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, discusses how to resect the filum terminale ependymoma.
The surgery was performed with the patient placed in the prone position and spinal levels T12 and L2 were identified. After exposure, a complete left-sided hemilaminectomy of T12 and a partial hemilaminectomy of T11 and L1 was performed. The tumor was exposed with longitudinal durotomy. The tumor was then debulked with an ultrasonic aspirator. The cranial attachment of the tumor was visible and the tumor origin was identified on the filum terminale. Surgeons then cut the filum to resect the tumor.
This video is a teaching tool to help surgeons prepare for surgery or they can use it as a refresher on the surgical technique and indications for this surgery.
