Patients with FAI had high return-to-running rate after hip arthroscopy

Young adult patients with femoroacetabular impingement and capsular plication had a high rate of return to running after arthroscopic treatment, according to results.

“However, runners should be counseled before their surgery that they may run fewer miles than when they were pain free,” Shane J. Nho, MD, MS, and colleagues wrote in their study. “Additionally, patients with a higher BMI and/or longer preoperative lull may have a longer recovery time.”

The researchers retrospectively retrieved clinical data for 51 consecutive patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) who had undergone hip arthroscopy and identified themselves as recreational or competitive runners. Researchers administered modified Harris Hip score and the hip outcome score activities of daily living and sport-specific subscales preoperatively and at 6 months, 12 months and 12 months postoperatively. Researchers also used a postoperative return-to-running survey to obtain running-specific information.

Results showed 94% of patients returned to running at a mean of approximately 8.5 months, with a longer return-to-running time found among patients who had discontinued running for more than 8 months before surgery vs. patients who had stopped for fewer than 8 months. Researchers noted a significant decrease in mean preoperative distance after 2 years from approximately 9.5 miles per week when patients were healthy to approximately 6.4 miles postoperatively. However, according to results, all 2-year outcome scores improved significantly despite the decreased mileage. – by Casey Tingle
