The European School for Training in Orthopedics, known as ESTRO, is a European Union project that is approved and granted by the European Commission in the form of an ERASMUS+ strategic partnership project in the field of a higher education, training and youth program. ESTRO received the official support of UEMS-EBOT after the meeting of the UEMS-EBOT section, which was held in Bucharest, Romania, 9 to 10 September 2016.

In line with the 2011 European Union (EU) Modernization Agenda’s priority areas, the goal of this project is to contribute to the enhancement of the quality and outcomes of education and training in orthopaedics and traumatology in Europe.
EU training framework
By the close relations with and contribution of the EFORT-UEMS-EBOT section, ESTRO will work to set up a common E.U. framework of reference in terms of methodology and contents for the orthopaedic and traumatology training and will design a mobility scheme for trainees and young residents in orthopaedics and traumatology to move between different EU institutions/departments for the purposes of placement. Furthermore, ESTRO will help in terms of harmonization and standardization of the quality of education in Europe and preparation for the EBOT and national board exams by providing the following:
- intensive courses including five modules w/international experts;
- e-learning lectures/exams in collaboration with Orthobullets;
- virtual learning opportunities; and
- universal fellowship programs.
ESTRO upcoming events
The ESTRO project consists of these five education modules:
- basic science/Austria;
- upper limb/Turkey;
- lower limb/France;
- pediatric orthopaedics and spine/Italy; and
- orthopaedic oncology/Turkey.
Each partner university will organize a course for one of the modules. The first ESTRO modules on basic science will be held 29 to 30 May, in Hainburg, Austria, and 31 May to June 2 during the 2017 EFORT Congress in Vienna.
Furthermore, due to an invitation from the Korean Orthopaedic Association (KOA), an ESTRA session will be organized and held during the KOA Meeting, in Seoul, South Korea from 19 to 21 October 2017. Registration for the congress will be complimentary for ESTRO members. We encourage your participation in these meetings to disseminate the ESTRO philosophy.
An application for a crediting system is underway that will be accessible at www.estroproject.eu/fellowship so those who participate in educational activities can gain credits, based on their participation in ESTRO educational activities, such as courses, workshops, webinars or e-learning lectures, or in ESTRO-supported activities. At the end of a calendar year, a participant with enough credits is eligible to apply to the fellowship mobility program.
Project for young surgeons
Therefore, we take ESTRO as all young orthopaedic and trauma surgeons’ project. We believe ESTRO will grow with your support and participation. To the best of our knowledge, ESTRO is the first project that houses the scientific, as well as the cultural expectations of young doctors in Europe. To benefit from all educational programs, we kindly ask you to complete your registration at www.estroproject.eu/registration.
On behalf of ESTRO, I extend a special thanks to the following ESTRO Young Committee members for putting a tremendous effort into the project: Filippo Familiari (Italy), Luca La Verde (Italy), Danny Ryan (United Kingdom), Antonio Arenas (Spain), Bujar Shabani (Kosovo), Dafina Bytyqi (Kosovo), Florin Cioanca (Romania), Lukas Ernstbrunner (Switzerland), Olivier Flamand (Belgium), Philip Hitov (Bulgaria), Philip Roessler (Germany), Piotr Zagorski (Poland), and Szymon Czech (Poland).
