It will be a pleasure to receive many European orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, residents and scientists, as well as several colleagues and friends from other continents at the 18th EFORT Annual Congress in Vienna. During the years, an increasing number of fellow professionals from Asia, Australia, South and North America, and Africa, have found their way to Europe’s largest and most international orthopaedic meeting: the EFORT Congress. Europe is the historical heart and soul of the practice of orthopaedic and traumatology surgery. Sharing our experiences in the treatment of patients with colleagues from around the globe is for us, therefore, a responsibility, as well as a pleasure.

The EFORT was founded in 1993 and will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year, so EFORT is still a rather young organization. Nevertheless, it is an entity that represents all European countries and more than 45,000 orthopaedic and trauma surgeons. During the last quarter of a century, our members have witnessed how sharing our challenges and experiences helps us to better serve the needs of our patients and better deliver quality health care. So please attend this year’s congress. Share your experiences, offer up challenging questions for presenters and let your views be known.

Free symposia, instructional lectures

The EFORT 2017 meeting includes a wealth of educational opportunities. Symposia and instructional lectures will be given by scholarly and distinguished speakers from all across Europe. These opportunities do not require any additional charges, being included in the registration fee!

To encourage interaction among participants, there will be Interactive Expert Exchange and Complex Case Discussion sessions led by world-renowned faculty. Residents and attendees who seek a specialty refresher may find the Easy Evidence Update sessions, which were first introduced last year, of interest. These sessions aim to provide key educational material that bolster knowledge, skills and attitudes, and enhance professional practice.

However, the 2017 EFORT Congress in Vienna will be a platform for the exchange of cutting-edge scientific knowledge, with several papers and posters presented at the meeting on the latest scientific and clinical studies. It will also include the keynote Michael Freeman and Erwin Morscher Honorary Lectures, which will be delivered by two highly distinguished European colleagues. The Michael Freeman Lecture given by Prof. Henrik Kehlet, from Denmark, is entitled, “Fast-track hip and knee replacement – Have we reached the goal?” During the Erwin Morscher Lecture, Prof. Nico Verdonschot, from The Netherlands, will lecture on, “Development of patient-specific reconstructive methods using advanced imaging and biomechanical modeling techniques.”

Sports injuries in focus

The theme of the congress in Vienna — sports activities and orthopaedic practice — will be evident throughout the program and many symposia and lectures will expand upon different aspects of this theme. Other highlights of the congress include e-health applications in orthopaedic research, hip trauma and sport, less frequent shoulder sport injuries, treatment of chronic bone infection, shoulder instability management and functional outcomes after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty, among others. At the congress, please try to attend the Advanced Course in Total Knee and Hip Replacement.

We look forward to seeing you soon in the culturally rich city of Vienna for the EFORT Annual Congress.
