SAN DIEGO —  Ayesha Rahman, MD, spoke about radiation exposure in pediatric orthopedic patients. She said pediatric orthopedic patients are highly susceptible to adverse effects from exposure to radiation. Rahman said orthopedic surgeons need to understand the radiation exposure dosage, understand the actual dosages of radiation correlated with the types of studies ordered, identify high-risk patients in the pediatric population and understand which studies are best suited for an individual patient.

She said orthopedic surgeons should do only studies necessary and minimize the risk of radiation to patients.
