VIDEO: Iorio discusses new program for readmission, complication prevention after TJR

SAN DIEGO —  Richard Iorio, MD, spoke about the new surgeon-directed program, Perioperative Orthopaedic Surgical Home, which was developed as a tool to prevent readmissions and complications after total joint replacement (TJR). He and his colleagues modified eight readmission risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes, fall risks, drug and alcohol abuse, infection prevention measures, cardiac and stroke issues and smoking, to better manage patients and reduce complications. Optimized patients had significantly better outcomes and fewer comorbidities compared with patients who were not optimized.
