VIDEO: Thoracic hemivertebra resection by posterior approach for congenital scoliosis

#

In this video from Open Operating Theatre, Ibrahim Obeid, MD, from Bordeaux University Hospital in France, discusses how to perform thoracic hemivertebra resection using a posterior approach for congenital scoliosis.

The surgery was performed with a three-rod technique to decrease the risk of pedicle fracture. Surgery was performed under neuromonitoring. During the reduction maneuver, after the hemivertebra was removed, the T8 pedicle fractured and was replaced by a T7 supralaminar hook. With gradual compression, surgeons closed the resection site. Fluoroscopy was used to confirm deformity correction. Surgeons tightened screws and hooks and then placed and fixed hooks on the concave side.

This video is a teaching tool to help surgeons prepare for surgery or they can use it as refresher on the surgical technique and indications for this surgery.
