VIDEO: Zuckerman discusses mortality risk in patients who sustain periprosthetic hip fractures

SAN DIEGO —  At the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Joseph Zuckerman, MD, discussed mortality rates for patients who sustain periprosthetic hip fractures. He said patients who sustained periprosthetic hip fractures had an increased mortality risk, particularly at 6 months and 12 months postoperatively, compared with patients who underwent either elective hip or knee replacement. However, when compared with hip fractures, periprosthetic hip fractures did not have as great a mortality risk.

He said these results are significant because older patients want to know their mortality risk. Orthopedic surgeons can tell patients there is a risk, particularly at 1 year postoperatively, but it is not as high as initially thought.
